In the end, I want to express my gratitude to the Taipei City Government Department of Education, principal and teacher from Yangming Senior High School, peers in my group, and all the kind people I have met during this trip. Personally, this trip was extremely eye opening for me. As much as I appreciate and adore my own culture, I have also acknowledged how I tend to thrive in more open ways of education, and how it would benefit me more if all classes and projects were in English. This encourages me to participate in exchange programs in college, as I yearn to learn more about cultures all over the world. Lastly, I want to give myself some credit for being brave. Like Leigh in The Astonishing Color of After, I figured out how much this program matters for me, as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and pushed myself to be more outgoing, which came with many advantages, and I am proud to say that I leave no regrets coming out of this trip. Before I left, I thought ten days would be enough. After I arrived, I found that ten days passed quickly. It seemed like I was just starting to get used to the Australian lifestyle when I had to go back to Taiwan. After returning to Taiwan, I felt that the experience and vision I gained were far more than what ten days could offer. Australia is a very friendly country. Locals will chat with strangers and often help each other. Overall, I have a very good impression of the people and public safety in Australia. I originally had the stereotype that Australian students are almost all white, very tall, have fair skin, are outgoing, and like to use social media. However, after arriving in Australia, I found that Australians are not a single ethnic group. There are many immigrants from different countries. Even among white people, most Australians have darker skin than us because they often go to the beach to exercise. People will not look at us differently because we are not locals. People of different ethnic groups live together on this land, blending into a tolerant and friendly Australian culture. Australian parents are actually more conservative than expected. Most high school students are not allowed to have Instagram accounts. My host family even said that their daughter had to wait until she was 27 years old to get social media. During my study program, I learned that it is important to actually experience things , rather than just learning about them from books or other people. I learned to live and study independently, becomming more courageous, confident, and better at getting along with others. I am more comfortable speaking up and expressing my ideas in English. Also, I made new friends from different backgrounds. I had an amazing time studying abroad in Australia. I learned a lot about the country and its culture. I also improved my English language skills. I would highly recommend studying abroad in Australia to anyone who is interested in experiencing a new culture and learning more about the world. |
